A COUNCIL refuse service is on track to reach next year's Government recycling target of 18 per cent.
Wear Valley District Council's current green box scheme and garden waste collection service will divert 15 per cent of waste from landfill sites.
To achieve the further three per cent demanded by next year, some refuse vehicles will be diverted each week from their normal disposal point at Todhills, near Willington, to the Thornley Aerobic Digestion Plant, near Easington.
Max Coleby, acting director of community services, said yesterday: "We are on course to reach the 18 per cent target."
