A CYCLIST was in a critical condition in hospital last night after a rush-hour collision with a car on a dual carriageway.
The 41-year-old Wearside man was knocked from his bike in the accident involving a Vauxhall Vectra, on the A1231 Sunderland Highway, between the Asda Regional Distribution Depot and the Nissan factory, in Washington.
He was taken by ambulance to Gateshead's Queen Elizabeth Hospital suffering serious multiple injuries.
The westbound stretch of the road was closed after the accident, which happened at 7.30am, for about five hours
