Dinner lady Violet Field was the centre of attention 30 years to the day after she first put on her pinny.
Mrs Field, who works at Framwellgate Moor Primary School, in Durham City, had no inkling that a special presentation had been arranged to mark the occasion.
And she found herself seated on a specially-made throne and wearing a crown as youngsters, including her own grandson Barry Stubbs, ten, presented flowers, cakes, chocolates and cards.
Acting head Diane Buckle said the school had wanted to mark her long service.
"The staff organised but the children did the presentation and we had to keep the preparations a secret.
"She was our queen for a day. She was on yard duty and some children asked her to help with a presentation and she went in and found out it was all for her.
"You can imagine her face. She thought it was probably going to be some low-key thing and there she was sat on a throne. She is a really friendly face to everyone and everyone loves her to bits. She is very popular with the staff and the children.''
