A VILLAGE'S school pupils are inviting pensioners to tea to talk about their wartime memories.
Pittington Primary School will hold a celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on Tuesday at 2pm.
The children want villagers aged 60 and over to come along and particularly want to meet older people who lived through the conflict.
The youngsters, dressed in period costume, will sing songs from the era and there will be an exhibition of memorabilia.
The event is organised by the school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA), which got a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to cover costs.
PTA member Jayne Cox said that the grant allowed the school to buy copies of Terry Deary's wartime book, Blitzed Brits, to give to pupils as a memento.
"We wanted to organise and event which would bring the two generations - old and young - together,'' said headteacher Cathy Lee.
"An afternoon tea seemed an ideal way to do this."
The school is staging several events to mark the anniversary.
Pensioners needing transport can call the school on 0191-372 0314 or PTA member Lesley King on 0191-584 1206.
