ALLOTMENT holders have told of their disappointment that their 80-year-old site is to be replaced with a multi-million pound development.
Gardeners must quit Hundens Lane allotments, in Darlington, by the end of September next year.
The site will be replaced by the £170m Central Park development, which will include offices, a hotel and a conference centre.
There are about 100 allotments at Hundens Lane, but only limited plots are available at alternative sites on Rydal Road, Lascelles Park and Arnold Road in the town.
Ron Bain, secretary and treasurer of Hundens Lane Allotments Society, said everyone was disappointed.
"These allotments have been here for years and years, they've been handed down through generations. There are people here who are in their 70s, I doubt they'll relocate to another place, they'll just give up their allotment."
