A Newton Aycliffe school is one of just 14 across the country to offer pupils an apprenticeship course in health and social care.
Woodham Community Technology College now runs a Young Apprenticeship in health and social care for year ten and 11 pupils. Students taking the course will be able to concentrate for two days a week on their specialist subject and have 50 days of relevant work experience linked to their studies.
The main focus of the scheme is to offer 14 to 16-year-olds a chance to learn a vocational subject and take work placements.
And the school believes it has taken this one step further as lessons will be held in the Pioneering Care Centre, in Newton Aycliffe, giving students access to its facilities and links with professionals such as health, child care and social workers.
The course is part of Woodham's 14-19 plans to develop links with the community.
