A HEALTH trust that covers a large part of the county is opening a centre for medical students.
The Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Trust, which covers hospitals in Scarborough, Malton, Whitby and Bridlington, was told by medical director Keith Beverley that students from the Hull and York Medical School are now being brought to Scarborough General Hospital.
Two temporary buildings have been refurbished and other accommodation provided for them.
Trust spokeswoman Gilly Collinson said: "This a very significant development because the general is a relatively small district hospital.
"The prospects for healthcare in our area are really exciting."
She said the move to establish the school highlighted the skills of the consultants and the esteem in which they are held in the region.
The students are undertaking five-year training courses, and those moving to Scarborough will be in their third year.
