A BUSY North-East airport has unveiled the newest recruit to its fire-fighting team.
The Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 CA5 is a pioneering, specialist aviation fire appliance at Newcastle International Airport - the first of its kind in the world.
Airport fire and rescue service manager Eric Westwood said: "The introduction of the Panther means that if an aircraft fire should ever occur at the airport, our firefighters can work with greater efficiency, and more importantly, safely.
"The Panther will ensure we act extremely quickly, exceeding expected response times and deliver results with accuracy and precision."
The vehicle boasts many extra features including all-wheel drive capability, allowing it to drive over obstacles and rough terrain.
The Panther also gives perfect all-round vision, there is more headroom for the driver and crew, and the wide doors make the cab more spacious.
Mr Westwood said: "Being a firefighter has never been so safe. We now have two powerful water cannons that are controlled effectively from within the safety of the vehicle and can throw water and foam up to a distance of 100 metres.
"The Panther also carries over two tonnes more water than the average aviation fire appliance."
