A COUNCIL has responded to criticism over its handling of an arson problem facing a recreation ground.
The statement from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council comes after a fire official said the Trunk Road Recreation Ground, in Dormanstown, near Redcar, had been hit by arsonists more than 40 times in the past month.
Tony Churchill, watch manager at Grangetown Fire Station, said last week the arsonists were wasting the fire brigade's time and resources and risking lives.
He called for the council to get the discused sports centre knocked down.
A council spokesman said: "We have been in discussion with the property owner and we are satisfied he is doing all he can to actively pursue demolition of what has been left as a result of the arson attacks and criminal damage.
"However, we are also conscious of the community's concerns and it is likely that we will have to start enforcement action to speed up the demolition process in the near future."
The most recent incident was on September 19 when part of the old shooting range on the site was set alight. About six weeks ago the land was bought and earmarked for a £10m facelift.
