WORK has started on a modern centre aimed at providing a host of activities and services for families in the Willington area.
The centre in Chapel Street will cost £950,000 with £690,000 coming from SureStart Wear Valley East and a further £260,000 from the local Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
Yesterday, members of SureStart Wear Valley East and Willington school children gathered for the official turf cutting ceremony to launch the project.
It is hoped the centre will be up and running by April next year.
The services that will be offered include family learning, family support services, activities for parents and children from birth to age five, midwifery, links with smoking cessation services, Jobcentre Plus and a child minding network.
A spokesman for SureStart Wear Valley East said: "By adding the extra money from the neighbourhood renewal fund, the new SureStart building will be able to offer even better facilities for the local community than we had hoped and we are looking forward to having it up and running by April next year."
