NERVES are jangling at a North Yorkshire school as staff prepare to abseil down one of the region's most famous buildings.
The group, from Carnagill Community Primary School, in Catterick Garrison, will descend 150ft down the Baltic Centre, in Gateshead, on October 16.
Four members of staff will be joined for the abseil by an ex-employee and the husband of a teaching assistant.
They are hoping to raise more than £600 for the Royal National Institute of the Blind.
The charity was chosen because two visually impaired children are pupils at the school.
Headteacher Sandie Fitton said: "The money will help the school indirectly by going to a charity which two children in our school benefit from.
"It's an excellent cause."
School secretary Carole-Anne Lennon, who is taking part in the abseil, despite being scared of heights, said: "We get 15 minutes' training at the top and then off we go - I'm very nervous."
Meanwhile, the school is planning to hold a harvest festival where parents and children can donate towards the appeal.
Anyone who would like to support the staff can call (01748) 833622, or send a cheque to Carnagill Primary School, Leadmill Estate, Catterick Garrison, DL9 3HN.
