GARDENERS have been praised for the high quality of entries in an annual contest.
Representatives of Dobbies Garden World, in Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, selected Jean and Victor Cox's garden, in Cleveland Avenue, as the winner.
The competition, sponsored by Dobbies, was open to all council tenants in the Chester-le-Street district and the awards were made from a shortlist of 15 gardens.
Paul Travis Anderson, manager of Dobbies, said all the entries were of an exceptional standard.
Second prize was awarded to Frederick and Esme Maule, of Viador, and third to Kathleen Tasker, of Ouston. The prize for Best Improved Garden was awarded to William and Violet Jackson, of Auckland.
Ian Broughton, the council's director of community services, said: "It is very heartening to see the pride and sheer hard work that our tenants put in their gardens."
