POLICE are urging pedal cyclists to keep a close eye on their bikes following a recent spate of thefts.

In the past three weeks there have been 21 reported thefts of bicycles in the Easington district area, many taking place after they were left unattended or insecure within the grounds of the owners' houses.

On several occasions the bikes were stolen from a back yard or garden.

Although there is no particular pattern to the thefts, Horden seems to have been targeted most often.

Police suspect many of the bicycles have been stolen for profit, rather than being the work of opportunist thieves or youngsters on foot looking for a quicker method of transport.

However, one of the offences in Horden saw the thief make off on a new cycle having left his old bike at the scene.

"We are asking cyclists to keep an eye on their bikes and secure them, even if they are gone for just a few minutes.

"Locks and other devices can be bought very cheaply and with many pedal cycles costing hundreds of pounds it is a small price to pay for what is usually an effective deterrent," said Sergeant Dave Young.

He added: "Often the owner cannot claim on their household insurance because the bikes are being stolen from outside the property."
