THE latest nationwide survey has once again found Newcastle to be the UK's favourite English city break destination.
Organisers of the Guard-ian/Observer Travel Awards say they remain the best measure of attitudes to the travel industry because they reflect the experiences of 27,000 British holidaymakers.
For the fourth consecutive year, Newcastle/Gateshead was third in the favourite UK city category.
Edinburgh and Belfast were first and second, making Newcastle/Gateshead the best destination in England.
Andrew Dixon, acting chief executive of destination marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: "This survey demonstrates that Newcastle/Gateshead is maintaining its popularity with visitors - consistently coming out as the people's choice.
"As well as the wealth of cultural attractions and events, vibrant, cosmopolitan nightlife and iconic architecture that we have to offer, customer service undoubtedly plays an important part in the overall visitor experience."
