PARISHIONERS are being asked to dig deep to boost a fundraising campaign aiming to restore a Darlington church.

More than £325,000 has been raised in the past 12 years to repair and maintain St James the Great Church, in the Albert Hill area.

Three years ago, the church council committed itself to restoring the roof and the west window, as well as other essential repairs.

That work is expected to cost about £254,000 and the church is already a long way towards reaching that total.

About £184,000 has been raised, with the help of grants and other donations, and church officials are asking for support to collect the final £70,000.

Writing for parishioners in the church's latest newsletter, Father Ian Grieves said: "I write to you as friends of St James the Great Church, seeking any financial help that you may be able to give - a donation, a loan, or other positive suggestions."
