Bishop Auckland were left to regret their missed chances and had to settle for an FA Vase replay against Skelmersdale.

Bishops went into the game as underdogs because of Skelmersdale's 100 per cent record this season in the North West Counties League, but they should have come home with a place in the next round instead of a Wednesday replay.

After the 0-0 draw manager Brian Honour said: "We should have beaten them because we carved them open so many times, but we missed a lot of chances.

"I hope that we haven't missed our opportunity to go through, and we take our chances in the replay.

"But having said that, if we were offered a draw before the game, we would have taken it."

Bishops were well in control in the first-half, but Mark Sheeran wasted a good chance when he burst through but shot straight at the keeper, who also pulled off a good save from Chris I'Anson.

Skelmersdale came more into the game after the interval, but Bishops still should have won it. Sheeran ran through again but the keeper saved, while he and I'Anson both put good chances wide.

Of the North-East clubs, only Blyth are definitely through after a 1-0 home win over Prescot Cables. Robert Dale scored the goal that mattered with a header after six minutes, although Scott Bell should have made the game safe. Blyth have conceded just two goals in 11 league and cup matches this season.

Two ANL clubs, Dunston and Thornaby, replay on Wednesday after a 1-1 draw at Federation Park.

There weren't many chances in the first half, the closest either side came to scoring was a shot from Dunston's Steve Pickering that was cleared off the line. Pickering broke through on 50 minutes from a pass by Alex Benjamin, but Thornaby levelled on 75 minutes when striker Richie Storr beat Dunston keeper Stuart Dawson at the second attempt.

Billingham Synthonia held UniBond League high flyers North Ferriby in the first-half at Central Avenue, but in the end lost 3-0.

The turning point was a 48th minute penalty from Carl Fothergill following a foul by Tommy Marron, then Gary Bradshaw scored from the edge of the box. Fothergill ran through for the third on 76 minutes.

Chester-le-Street lost 3-1 at home to Leigh after being level at half time.

The Conference North side took the lead when Chester keeper Paul Newton couldn't hold a powerful shot from Lee Thompson and Chris Simms scored from the rebound, but Chester levelled when Phil Bell nodded the ball down for Jonny Wightman to score.

Bell nearly made it 2-1 to Chester with a header, but Leigh broke the deadlock through Neil Smith after Thompson's shot was blocked, and then Thompson scored a third deep into stoppage time.

Consett had a bad day, thumped 5-1 at home by Ossett Town from the UniBond League.

The visitors missed several chances before they opened the scoring through James Hayward on 41 minutes, and then they scored four more in the second half through Neil Allinson, James Walshaw (two) and Hayward, before Chris Douglas scored a late consolation for Consett.

Gateshead were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at Salford City two divisions below them in the North West Counties League. They looked as if they would hold on for a replay until Salford's Lee McNally scored with a diving header eight minutes from the end.

Whitby live to fight again after a 1-1 draw at another NWCL side, Trafford. Glynn Barker headed Trafford into the lead on 55 minutes, but Whitby were level three minutes later with an effort by Tommy Raw.

Hebburn's dreams of glory ended when they lost 5-1 at Barrow.

They went 3-0 down by the 35th minute with goals by former Darlington player Neil Tarrant, Jonathan Smith and Steve Flitcroft.

Joe Fulcher raised hopes of a comeback, but Barrow quickly scored another before half-time through Michael Rushton to finish Hebburn off. Gavin Knight scored the fifth in the second half.

The draw for the third qualifying round is made this morning.
