ORGANISERS of a sheep fair say the event was a huge success, raising between £5,000 and £6,000 for charity.

The 20th Masham Sheep Fair, in North Yorkshire, took place this weekend.

Once again, the fair's sheep racing was one of the most popular events.

Started a few years ago as a one-off fun event, it is now one of the show's highlights.

Four sheep wearing different colours race along 200 yards as punters take bets in a sweepstake to see who will win.

About 1,500 sheep were also entered in 140 classes in the show.

Organiser Susan Cunliffe-Lister said: "The sheep racing was very popular once again.

"But the whole thing went really well, the weather was perfect on Saturday and so we had lots of people turn out.

"I think it was the most crowded it's ever been.

"We've had a few more sheep than last year, so it's beginning to pick up after foot and mouth.

"The weather made a huge difference."

Attractions also included sheepdog displays, a children's fair, morris dancing, craft stalls and a procession with bands.

Proceeds from the fair will go to Yorkshire Cancer Research, Dalescare and research into meningitis.
