RESIDENTS in a Middlesbrough high-rise block of flats celebrated their home's 20th anniversary.
People living in Milford House, a sheltered accommodation in Brambles Farm, gathered with current and former staff, as well as ex-Middlesbrough councillors, to celebrate the birthday yesterday.
The block, which contains 54 flats and is run by Erimus Housing, is still home to 12 of its original residents, who joined in the festivities.
Resident Flo Theakston said: "We have had some great residents over the years and some very good entertainment. I've always felt safe and secure."
The celebrations have been organised by warden David Hall, who lives on-site, with help from the residents.
Mr Hall's wife, Irene, died in 2001 after a battle with cancer, but she is still remembered as the original warden of Milford House. After she retired, David took over the role.
He now helps the residents organise events, including days out, bingo sessions and lunch and breakfast clubs.
Bob Brady, board chairman for Erimus Housing, attended the opening of the block when he was chairman of Middlesbrough Council's housing committee.
He said: "Both Irene, and now David, have run Milford House as an extension of their own home.
"The residents have built their own neighbourhood within the block, which has led to great social interaction as well as a strong sense of community."
