A DURHAM charity that teaches people how to cook has been given £1,000 for equipment.
Electrical store Currys, on the Durham City Retail Park, at Dragonville, has given the money to Hands-on Cooking so it can buy kitchen utensils and equipment for its office.
The charity has been running for two years and is based in the Shakespeare Hall, North Road, but hopes to move to new premises if funding comes through.
It was started by former GCSE food technology teacher Lorna Prasad, of Brandon, to teach people how to cook and eat healthily.
It works with people including students, people with mental problems, the elderly, young offenders and youth club members, teaching basic cookery skills.
Miss Prasad said many people did not know how to prepare basic meals and relied on take-away food or microwave dinners from supermarkets.
The charity will be taking part in the Durham Local Food Celebration, which starts today, and will feature in a cookery demonstration on Saturday, October 8, in Durham's Gala Theatre between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
