A NEW site is needed for Whitby's television and radio transmission mast because it is threatened by the erosion of its cliff top site.
The 80ft high mast has been at the centre of controversy because of its prominent position next to Whitby Abbey and its visibility from miles around.
Now, Crown Castle UK which owns and operates the site on the East Cliff, says an alternative site is needed to provide terrestrial cover for Whitby and its surrounding area.
A shortlist of potential sites has been drawn up following talks with planners from Scarborough Borough Council, North York Moors National Park Authority and English Heritage.
An exhibition is being staged in Whitby on September 22, 23 and 24, at The Coliseum when representatives of the company and the BBC will be present to hear the public's views.
Three of the sites earmarked are at Whitby - Abbey Farm, Whitby Business Park, and Larpool, and the fourth at Partridge Hill, Sneaton.
