WOODLAND chiefs are inviting people to take part in a series of walks in the region.
The Forestry Commission has organised several treks to look at varieties of fungi in North-East forests.
They have also launched a website as part of its Activewoods health initiative that will chart the colour changes of woodland.
The walks are being held at Hamsterley Forest, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, next Sunday. Anyone taking part is asked to meet at the visitor centre at 2.30pm. The cost is £4 for adults and £2 for concessions, and must be booked on (01388) 488312.
Another walk will be held at Kielder Forest on Sunday, October 2. Participants are asked to meet at Kielder Castle at 11am. The cost is £4, or £2 for concessions, and must be booked on (01434) 250209.
A trek will be held at Chopwell Wood, near Gateshead, on Sunday, October 11. Adults will be charged £2, but children are free. Anyone who wants to take part is asked to meet in the main car park at 2pm.
The Forestry Commission's website can be found at www.forestry. gov.uk/autumn. It will be updated weekly using a colour code to denote changes, with gold heralding the peak period.
