DRUG raids that netted heroin, cocaine and cannabis, and led to ten arrests, signalled the start of a three-month crackdown on crime, say a city's police chiefs.

The campaign, which began on Thursday, focused on housing estates in the north of Sunderland, including Fulwell and Roker.

Northumbria Police say their aim is to reduce burglaries, thefts, drug-dealing and anti-social behaviour.

The operation will consist of high visibility patrols, intelligence gathering and targeted raids, and officers will work with partner agencies to find long-term solutions to reduce re-offending.

While Thursday's raids focused on the activities of drug-dealers, future operations will target stolen property, vehicle crime, and anti-social behaviour.

Crime in Sunderland has fallen by more than 17 per cent in the past year, as a result of successful short-term operations tackling burglary and vehicle crime.

However, Chief Superintendent Dave Pryer, Sunderland Area Commander, said the crime reduction in the north of the city had been slower than other areas.

He said: "We believe this operation will have a significant impact on improving the quality of life for people who live in the area.

"As a police service, we cannot work alone. We will be working closely with the community and partner organisations to achieve the best results.

"This will send a clear message that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated."
