THE life and work of a Yorkshire Dales author and historian are to be celebrated in an exhibition.

Marie Hartley, who is 100 this month, founded the Dales Countryside Museum, in Hawes, with friend Ella Pontefract in the 1940s.

She has also written numerous books about the area.

In 1997 her efforts were rewarded with an MBE.

An exhibition will be held at the museum to celebrate the author's life, from September 29 to November 17.

Museum manager Fiona Rosher said: "Marie's enduring work has ultimately led to the creation of a collection that is of local, regional and potentially, national significance.

"In addition, her combined skills as photographer, writer and artist created a unique record of the past way of life in the Dales.

"Her work connects directly with our collection, often showing the exact context within which items were used.

"Marie is an inspiration to all who work to preserve and interpret the cultural heritage of the Dales and beyond."

The Friends of the Dales Countryside Museum group is publishing a celebratory book which will be available to buy at the exhibition.
