SCHOOLCHILDREN are being encouraged to become more active - and use a new footpath and cycleway linking two neighbouring villages.
The path, between Hurworth and Neasham, near Darlington, was funded by Darlington Borough Council, Castlebeck Care - which runs the Newbus Grange centre for adults with learning disabilities - and green transport charity, Sustrans.
Although the path was open to the public last month, it was due to be officially opened yesterday, but bad weather forced the ceremony to be postponed.
Councillor Nick Wallis, the borough council's cabinet member for highways, said: "I am delighted that the footpath is open and has already been used by so many people.
"The council is keen to encourage people to walk and cycle and this path will make it safer and easier for more people."
The path will form part of Regional Route 52 of the National Cycle Network and will eventually connect to the National Cycle Network at Middleton St George.
