A MOTORIST was killed early today when his car ploughed into a bridge, flipped over and rolled into a ditch.
The man, who has yet to be named, was at the wheel of a black Hyundai coupe and was certified dead at the scene.
The accident happened on the Howe Bridge, over the River Rye, near High Marishes on the A169 Pickering to Malton road.
Police were alerted at about 7am when a passing motorist found the wrecked car lying in a ditch by the river.
No other vehicles were involved in the smash - which led to delays for hundreds of other motorists while the road was closed as investigators examined the scene.
The victim is believed to be aged around 20 and from the Whitby area.
