JACK Wilkinson could top a memorable week with a place in the Hartlepool United squad tomorrow.
Pool meet table-topping Swansea at Victoria Park, still seeking their first win at home after two League One draws and two defeats this season.
Wilkinson this week signed his first professional contract and boss Martin Scott, who handed Michael Maidens his debut and fielded a young bench in last week's win at Blackpool, could pitch the striker into his 16 on duty at the weekend.
"He's done very well at the club and he deserves a contract,'' said Scott. "He came through the ranks and made an impression in the first team two seasons ago.
"Everyone saw then what he is capable of doing. He's progressed through the youth team into the reserves like a lot of lads and now they all want to get in the first-team. That's good for everyone because they all have the hunger to succeed.
"I've never had any doubts about Jack, I rate him very highly.
"He has showed his commitment at the club over the years. His family live in Bridlington and he has moved away from them to play for this club.
"It can't have been easy for him to move away, but that shows how desperate he is to progress.
"He has trained with the first team yesterday and we will decide on Friday if he will be involved on Saturday. We will have a good look at him then and decide.
"We've injuries to key players up front and Jack is in there with the rest of them to be involved.''
* Goalkeeper Sam Russell will deliver a timely boost to Darlington's early-season promise when he makes his long-awaited return to the side against Oxford United tomorrow.
Darlington manager David Hodgson has several players available after injury, but it is the return to fitness of Russell, which has provided most anticipation.
After a five-match absence, the 22-year-old was back in full training this week and his resumption will come as a major lift for Hodgson, who has defiantly stood by Bert Bossu, despite seeing the Frenchman concede 11 goals.
Russell is nearing full fitness after a niggling calf problem and Hodgson is set to recall the former Middlesbrough stopper for the visit of the Us.
"Sam is coming along very well and is hopeful of playing," confirmed club physio, Paul Gough.
Former Sunderland midfielder Jonjo Dickman should keep his place in Hodgson's side, despite taking a knock at Mansfield six days ago, while Matty Appleby will be pushing for a recall after a hip problem.
Former Middlesbrough striker Andy Campbell is struggling to hold on to his place tomorrow after a disappointing start to his Oxford career. Campbell is on loan from Cardiff.
* Defender Chris Mason has left the club. The teenager, who featured for Darlington in pre-season, spent the beginning of the season on loan at Harrogate. Mason made just one first-team appearance, as a late substitute in the 1-0 win at Scunthorpe on the final day of the 2003/04 season.
