WORK is starting on a series of projects in Thirsk as part of a drive to cut the number of road casualties.

The measures are aimed at improving safety for all road users - but specifically accidents involving pedestrians and turning vehicles.

Among the projects is a plan for an improved pedestrian crossing in Finkle Street, at the entrance to the Market Place, with a "speed table" to slow down traffic approaching the crossing.

To further simplify the junction for turning vehicles, it is planned to make the remainder of Millgate within the Market Place a one-way system.

Slightly raised crossing points to assist pedestrians and a 20mph speed limit in the centre of the town will be installed as part of the scheme.

Work is already under way in the Market Place and to carry out the work safely, Millgate and Finkle Street will be closed for certain periods.

Peter Sowray, the county's executive member for environmental services, said: "We are introducing these measures to create a safer environment for pedestrians and road users alike.

"The timing of the work has been scheduled to avoid the busy summer period and the lead up to Christmas, in consultation with the Chamber of Trade and other stakeholders."

Finkle Street will be closed from September 26 to October 6 between the bridge near library and the Market Place.

Millgate and Finkle Street will be closed for four days from October 25 until October 28 for resurfacing work.
