MARKS & Spencer last night confirmed it had signed a deal with the owners of Teesside Retail Park to open a 33,000 sq ft store.
The company has agreed a lease from British Land, the owner of the retail park near Stockton, and said it planned to open a store at the park in autumn next year. It will offer fashion, food and home ranges. Sandie Almond, of Marks & Spencer, said: "We're delighted to reinforce our commitment to the North-East by unveiling plans for this new store"
The retailer has suffered a sharp fall in sales in recent months, but says it is in a better position than a year ago.
Last month, it said sales fell by 5.4 per cent during the 14 weeks to July 9.
Earlier this year, it sold its 70,000 sq ft Lifestore in Gateshead to Danish furniture retailer Ilva for £35m. The store cost £14m to fit out, and losses were about £29m.
