THE twin towns of Malton and Norton have been selected to pilot a Government project which is likely to play a key part in boosting their economic prospects.
Town centre manager Peter Mudge said the news that Yorkshire Forward had identified the towns to apply to become one of the Government's Business Improvement Districts (Bid) was "marvellous".
Yorkshire Forward - the Leeds-based regional development agency - and Ryedale District Council have supported the Malton and Norton Initiative, the group set up to aid the towns' economy.
Mr Mudge said: "We believe this is the only Bid scheme north of Birmingham.
"Yorkshire Forward has been impressed with our achievements and the way the Initiative has progressed in the past year."
Bids are a concept devised in the US, with businesses voting on initiatives that will benefit themselves.
Mr Mudge believes the opportunity will generate thousands of pounds of investment.
He said that businesses would pay either one per cent or 1.5 per cent of their business rates to the Bid scheme.
