AN 18-year-old pedestrian was seriously hurt when he was involved in an accident with a car on an unlit country road at the weekend.

Police said a Ford Mondeo was being driven east on the A181 at Byers Garth, east of Durham, when the accident took place, at 12.55am on Saturday.

The pedestrian, from Murton, east Durham, suffered serious head, arm and internal injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

He was taken to hospital in Durham.

A 40-year-old male driver from the Hartlepool area suffered minor injuries.

Police have appealed for anyone who may have seen the pedestrian or Mondeo before the accident to call them on 0845 60 60 365.
