PEOPLE are being invited to take a trip into Durham City's heritage and history with a pint.

Tonight, a free tour of four of the city's oldest pubs is being held.

The tour will start at the Half Moon, New Elvet, at 7pm, and will visit the Dun Cow, in Old Elvet, the Victoria, in Hallgarth Street, which has hardly changed since the late 19th Century, and finish at the Shakespeare, in Saddler Street.

Recent plans to modernise the Half Moon and the Shakespeare provoked an outcry.

Durham Prison Officers' Club, based in medieval farm buildings in Hallgarth Street and dating from the 14th Century, will be open from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Sunday.

Sunderland Volunteer Life Brigade will open its headquarters at The Watch House, Pier View, Roker, from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, and people can see, hear and even play an old cinema organ from 11am to 4pm on Sunday at the community association in Ryhope Street, Ryhope.
