A PLAN to drill for oil and gas at Dalby Forest has run into opposition from neighbouring farmers.
Viking UK, based at East Knapton, Malton, wants to sink an exploratory borehole next to the disused gas valve compound on common land at Ebberston, the North York Moors National Park's planning committee will be told today.
But farmers complain that it will be close to a camping field and will cause noise, smell and have a detrimental visual impact on the area.
In addition, they say the access road is private and unmade.
The parish council echoes the worries because of the damage which could be caused by heavy lorries and machinery, especially on the Forestry Commission's unmetalled roads.
The scheme is recommended for approval, however, but with 26 conditions.
These stipulate that permission be temporary, for two years, and that the land be reinstated to its original condition.
