ENGLAND'S footballers slipped to a humiliating defeat in Northern Ireland last night.

The World Cup qualifying game ended in a 1-0 win for the hosts, a result that will pile the pressure on England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and increase calls for his removal.

David Healy scored the only goal of the game in one of the most memorable nights in Northern Ireland's 125-year history.

The defeat is a blow to England's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup finals next year.

After the game, a disappointed England captain David Beckham said: "Some strong words have been said by the manager and Steve McClaren in the dressing room. It's been an embarrassing night for the lads, but we'll stick together - that's what this team's all about."

England fans were heard chanting "sack the Swede" and the future of Eriksson is bound to be the subject of intense debate.

The country is now looking to England's cricketers to raise the spirits in today's all-important Ashes decider against Australia.

England lead the series 2-1 going into the final game at the Oval today, knowing a win or a draw would regain them the Ashes after 18 years.

Durham player Paul Collingwood faces an agonising few hours this morning as he waits to learn whether he will be named in the team.
