POLICE chiefs have been asked to get involved in the debate over the future of a village school.
Darlington Borough Council wants to relocate Hurworth School and merge it with Eastbourne Comprehensive in a new multi-million pound campus in Yarm Road.
The proposals caused outrage in Hurworth, where a campaign group was launched.
Fears about an increase in traffic and the potential risk to children at the Yarm Road site have been expressed.
Yesterday, Doris Jones, chairwoman of Middleton St George Parish Council said she had written to Durham Police's chief constable, Paul Garvin, asking for his views.
"The seriousness of the traffic issues and children being pushed onto an industrial estate should be brought to the police's attention.
"The traffic is already gridlocked at the best of times."
The borough council has insisted that it would not expect any major traffic problems at the proposed site, near the Cummins Engines factory.
A public meeting, organised by the Save Hurworth and Rural Education group, takes place tonight, at 7pm, at Middleton St George community centre.
