A campaign has been launched to rid the streets of untaxed and abandoned vehicles.
The drive, which is focusing on Harrogate, is aiming to encourage people to keep their driving licence and registration documents up to date.
One in three driving licences in Harrogate is not accurate and the agency is warning people that they could be fined £1,000 for having out-of-date documents.
Police checks take longer if the vehicle is stolen and cars that have to be recalled for safety reasons cannot be traced if the keepers have not informed the DVLA of their new address.
About a million vehicles are recalled every year.
Linda Weaver, of the DVLA, said: "We are encouraging motorists to MoT their paperwork in the same way they MoT their car. Keeping your driving documents up to date is as important as checking your car is roadworthy.
