TWO stalwarts of Bishop Auckland have been honoured for their service to the town.
George Robinson and Dennis Franklin, who worked for many years at Robinsons Shoe Shop, were recognised for their work by Bishop Auckland Town Centre Forum.
The two men were presented with gifts by Councillor Betty Todd at a function in their honour at the Four Clocks Centre, in Newgate Street.
The family-run shop was in Bishop Auckland for almost 120 years and was one of the most popular stores in the area. It has now been replaced by Clarks shoe shop.
Mr Robinson, who literally followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by running the shop, said: "It's very kind of everybody. It's most unexpected. I have enjoyed working and it was sad to leave."
Mr Franklin worked at the store for 66 years and met his wife, who also worked at the shop.
"I'm definitely very honoured, it's been an achievement," he said. "George has been a very good boss to me.
"I met my wife Dorothy there, when I saw her up on the ladder, showing her legs."
Town centre manager Derek Toon said: "We just felt that with Mr Franklin and Mr Robinson serving so long in the town, the forum wanted to say thank you for the services they have given."
