SPORTS enthusiasts who triumphed at a major competition were given a civic welcome on Wednesday.
Darlington's first Special Olympics team was greeted by town mayor Stella Robson after returning from the National Summer Games in Glasgow with a haul of medals.
They took part in football, ten-pin bowling, swimming and boccia - French-style boules - and came home with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
All the athletes received an Olympic ribbon to mark their involvement in the competition.
They all come from Darlington and attend day-care centres in the town, including Beck House, Beaumont Hill School and the Gateway Club.
Councillor Robson asked to meet the team when she heard about their achievement and invited them to the town hall for a tour and refreshments.
She said: "We are all very proud that, for the first time, Darlington had its own Special Olympics team, and I hope they continue to compete at every level."
