A COUNCIL'S biggest housing and regeneration scheme has been given a boost by the Audit Commission.
The independent watchdog report on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's housing strategy and enabling service gives it a two-star rating, citing it as good with promising prospects to improve.
Councillor Chris Abbott, the council's cabinet member for housing and neighbourhood renewal, said: "The report confirms we are in an excellent position to carry forward the next major phase of regeneration in South Bank and Grangetown.
"We have already successfully delivered the demolition of several hundred houses and successfully relocated the people without mass public demonstrations and with the help of a pioneering compensation package.
"We have worked closely with the people of South Bank and, while a minority is still concerned, we will meet with them on a regular basis to see that their issues are met."
The inspection team reported that the council had clearly identified the housing areas that needed most attention and is directing resources to address those needs, focusing on the impact that areas of housing market decline is having on residents within some areas of the borough.
The inspectors highlighted five positive areas: easy access to council services and focus on customer care; consultation with the community; clearly identified housing priorities and steps taken to address areas of housing market decline; a range of options offered to residents in clearance areas and positive partnership working.
