Adrian Nicholls is enjoying his best season and he was left only one short of a half century after completing a double on The Terrier and Sawwaah at Redcar yesterday.
The Terrier was opening her account at the third attempt in the Cockle Maiden Auction Stakes, getting home by half a length, and her trainer Alan Swinbank said: "She was bred by her owner Bumble Mitchell at her Beechgrove Stud Farm, and she has a half-sister to The Terrier going to the Sales next week.
"We have run two of our two-year-olds, and both have now won - we have another four or five, but they are mile-and-a-quarter types for next season and we are taking our time with them."
Sawwaah, trained by Nicholls's father David, had finished runner-up on his three previous appearances, and gained a deserved success in the Carlsberg Redcar Straight Mile Championship (Qualifier).
Nicholls (snr) is hoping for a good run from Gift Horse in Saturday's Group One William Hill Sprint at Haydock, and he said: "Adrian is riding very well and with a lot of confidence, he gave Sawwaah a lovely ride."
The Thirsk trainer also saddled eighth-placed Wistman and the gelding's rider, apprentice Victoria Behan, was fined £130 for not immediately reporting that her saddle had shifted during the race and could therefore have affected her mount's performance.
Swinbank doubled up when Bartra Rock won the concluding Clam Handicap in the hands of Dean McKeown, and the former went on: "We had four runners at Carlisle (no winners), but I wanted Dean to ride this one - he couldn't ride The Terrier because he couldn't do the weight."
Neil Callan is having his best season too, and he was also in double form, taking his score for the year to122 with victories on North Walk, who carried the colours of Tony Yates's Sunpak Potatoes company, in the Pertemps Employment Alliance Nursery, and Rae Guest's Trafalgar Square who came out best in the Marcus Design & Build Ltd Classified Stakes.
North Park was taking Kevin Ryan on to the 62 mark, only five short of his best, and Callan, who marries Trish Clow-Wilson on Sunday, has ridden 40 of the Malton trainer's winners.
He said: "I will take Monday and Tuesday off after the wedding, but I will be back for the Doncaster St Leger meeting, and we will have a proper honeymoon at somewhere like the Seychelles at the end of the season."
Hayley Turner brought Richard Whitaker's Neon Blue, who was visored for the first time, with a strong late burst to win the Constant Security Handicap in fine style.
