TWO motorists who died in road accidents at the weekend have been named by police. Winifred Anne Webber, 78, of Constable Burton, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire, died when her Renault Clio was involved in an accident with a Land Rover Discovery vehicle between Scotton and Hunton, near Catterick Garrison. In another incident, motorcyclist Jonathon Walsh, 44, of Quarry Hills Lane, Leyburn, died at the scene after his Honda was involved in an accident with a BMW on the A684 between Aysgarth and Bainbridge, in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. Inquests into both deaths have been opened and adjourned.

MINING SERVICE: An annual service commemorating Thomas Hepburn, the founder of the first Northumberland and Durham Miners' Union, will be at 11am tomorrow in St Mary's Church, Heworth, Gateshead. Bolsover Labour MP and former miner Dennis Skinner, who spoke at this year's Durham Miners' Gala, will give the main address. The North-East National Union of Mineworkers Brass Band will play in the church and at the graveside wreath-laying ceremony.

STILL CRITICAL: A man believed to have poured petrol over himself and set himself on fire almost two weeks ago is still critical in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. Arthur Eland, 36, of Catchgate, Stanley, County Durham, suffered burns to 80 per cent of his body.

BIKE CHARITY: Officers from Northumbria Police will cycle more than 150 miles in aid of breast cancer charity Breakthrough tomorrow. The 14 constables and two sergeants, based in South Tyneside, will ride coast-to-coast from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.
