CANCER survivor Michelle Thompson is taking on a challenging feat.
The mother-of-two, from Leyburn Road, Darlington, is training for the Great North Run this month to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief.
Running the world's biggest half-marathon is not the first time Michelle has undertaken a charity challenge. Less than a year ago, she completed a hiking challenge in Peru.
The 37-year-old had surgery to remove a thyroid gland two years ago after a cancer scare.
The operation came eight years after the death of her sister, Jeanette Nicholson, at the age of 18.
The full-time mother to Billy, seven, and Emily, 12, is devoting her time to raising money and awareness for the charity, which helps cancer sufferers and their families.
She said: "I am taking part in the Great North Run to say thank you to Macmillan for the help and support they gave me and my family when my sister was diagnosed with cancer and following my own cancer scare.
"I am also doing the run in memory of my sister and to show that there can be life after cancer."
The Great North Run will be on Sunday, September 18.
