POLICE discovered a 2ft sword, kitchen knife and hammer in the car of a teenager who had led them on a high-speed chase, a court heard.
Paul Jones, 18, failed to stop when Teesside officers saw him speeding in a Mazda car without lights in the early hours of April 16.
They followed him and saw him jump a red light and reach 80mph in a 30mph limit in Billingham.
Jenny Smith, prosecuting, told Teesside Crown Court that, at one point, Jones careered on to the other side of the road, causing two cars to veer on to a footpath.
He crashed his car into a hedge in Sandy Lane West, in the town, following the pursuit, which lasted about ten minutes.
Jones, of Whitehouse Road, Billingham, was arrested and found to be over the legal alcohol limit for driving.
A check of his car revealed the ornamental sword, 8in kitchen knife and hammer.
Jones told police he had been drinking. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon, but said the knife belonged to a friend.
Judge Michael Taylor described Jones as particularly stupid, and gave him a 150-hour community punishment order and banned him from driving for two years.
