POSTERS are being used in a campaign to highlight the legal implications of buying alcohol for youngsters.

Stockton Borough Council's community safety team is behind the initiative, which warns customers of a potential £5,000 fine.

Marilyn Davies, the council's community safety manager, said: "Drinking alcohol is often a major factor in young people acting anti-socially, littering and even committing crimes.

"However, many adults are unaware that it is illegal to supply alcohol to those under 18 and that they could be fined up to £5,000 for doing so.''

It is hoped that the posters will encourage residents to decline the requests of youngsters for alcohol and be a visual explanation for their refusal.

Councillor Paul Kirton, the council's cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: "Under-age drinking is a community issue. We are already working with local off-licences to reduce the problem and this campaign shows how residents can play their part."

The campaign is being supported by Cleveland Police, the Safer Stockton Partnership and the Violence Prevention Group.
