A TODDLER has died after falling into a garden pond.
Police and paramedics were called to a house in Brotton, near Saltburn, east Cleveland, after reports that a 15-month-old girl had fallen into the water.
A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: "The unconscious child was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by ambulance, where attempts were made to resuscitate her.
"Unfortunately, these attempts were unsuccessful and the child was later pronounced dead.
"The police are investigating the circumstances of the death and the coroner has been informed."
The incident happened at about 7.20pm on Sunday.
Detective Inspector Colin Galloway, who is leading the investigation, said police were required to investigate all sudden deaths and inquiries were ongoing.
An inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned later this week by Teesside Coroner Michael Sheffield
