AFTER handling thousands of angry bees, dealing with criminals is child's play for Special Constable Peter Gudgeon.
And now he is playing a role in a campaign to boost the numbers of special constables in the county.
The 45-year-old, who lives in Ripon with his wife and children, has dedicated at least four hours a week to his role as a special constable during the past 14 years.
By day, he is a landscape gardener and his spare time is taken up by his passion for beekeeping, which he has been involved in for 16 years and from which he produces and sells honey.
Mr Gudgeon said: "Being a special constable is a big part of my life, I enjoy helping the public and being able to make a difference.
"The best part of the job for me is being outside and working alongside such an experienced and efficient team of special constables.
"Because Ripon is a small community, everyone knows each other and wants to help out. I think that is why the police and the special constables work well together."
During his career as a special, Mr Gudgeon has received a number of accolades, including the Herbert Hey Trophy for the best special constable in his area and the Paul Darley Section Proficiency Trophy for leading the best-performing section in his district.
To encourage more people to become specials, the North Yorkshire force is launching a promotional campaign.
The countywide inititiave will include radio advertising, posters, leaflets and exhibition stands displayed in police stations, community centres, council offices and other public venues.
A number of specials, including Mr Gudgeon, are featured in the campaign to show that recruits are drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Chief Inspector Glyn Payne said: "Peter is an excellent example of a special constable. His wealth of experience and the amount of time he gives up for the Special Constabulary is fantastic.
"We are hoping that the public will be inspired by people like Peter and be encouraged to join the Special Constabulary."
