FIVE people died in accidents at the weekend.
Two women were killed in a single-vehicle collision on the A19 at Leake, near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, at about 9.30am yesterday. They were both rear-seat passengers.
The driver, a 25-year-old man, was taken to hospital with spinal injuries and released. Police later arrested him.
A woman in the front passenger seat was taken to the Friarage Hospital, in Northallerton. It is understood her injuries were not life threatening.
The road was closed until late afternoon while police investigators worked at the scene. Traffic was diverted through Northallerton.
On Saturday at 6.55pm, a motorcyclist died when his Honda was in collision with a blue BMW on the A684, between Aysgarth and Bainbridge, in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. The 44-year-old local man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car driver was badly shaken but unhurt.
In a separate incident, a woman died when her red Renault Clio was in collision with a maroon Land Rover Discovery, between Scotton and Hunton, near Catterick Garrison, at about 10.45am on Saturday.
The woman from nearby Constable Burton was declared dead at the scene.
A motorcylist died after losing control of his bike in Gateshead on Saturday.
The 22-year-old local man crashed into a field as he rode along Ashtree Lane.
It happened at 12.10am and he died at the scene. A 30-year-old Gateshead man also suffered minor injuries.
