A MEMORIAL is being erected in recognition of Second World War resistance fighters who helped Allied soldiers escape capture.

The monument will be put up in the parade ground at Eden Camp Museum, in Malton, North Yorkshire.

Two large slabs of rock from the Pyrenees have been provided by a French quarry.

The quarry owner's father helped RAF airmen escape to Spain after they were shot down during the war.

The memorial is being constructed by the Escape Lines Memorial Society, which meets regularly at the museum.

The society says 8,000 Allied soldiers were helped over the mountains by resistance fighters.

Peter Cornick, Eden Camp archivist, said: "Members of the society come from all over Europe to the museum. It's a real revelation to talk to them - they are wonderful people."
