David Hodgson couldn't help but feel sorry for Akpo Sodje at the weekend, writes Lee Hall.
Darlington's late capitulation meant that Sodje's first competitive hat-trick went almost unnoticed amid Saturday's dramatic eight-goal thriller at Chester.
Hodgson had nothing but praise for the 24-year-old, who marked his first start of the season in style.
However, the Quakers boss was disappointed that Sodje's three-goal salvo was still not enough to record a win.
"Sodje did exceptionally well," said Hodgson. "The boy scored three good goals and it's just a shame that we spoilt it for him."
Sodje was told at the start of the season that he would be third choice striker behind Simon Johnson and Clyde Wijnhard. However, after starting in place of Wijnhard, Sodje will again partner Johnson in attack against Rochdale this afternoon.
"His attitude has been second to none since he came to the club and he deserved his chance," said Hodgson. "He has come in and has taken his chance well."
Hodgson also had words of encouragement for Wijnhard, who will stay on the bench today.
"I hope that Clyde has taken on board why I took him out and I hope he will come back hungry to do well," said Hodgson.
"Clyde is an excellent player, but there are certain areas he needs to work on. I was disappointed with his ball retention at Hartlepool and that's why I took him out of the side.
"Sodje has worked his socks off for us and he's got his rewards. Hopefully, Clyde will stand up and take notice."
Hodgson will make a late check on the fitness of defender Shelton Martis, who took another knock on the back at the weekend. David Duke could make his full debut today.
Goalkeeper Sam Russell is continuing to struggle with a calf problem and Bert Bossu looks set to make his third start.
Despite conceding ten goals - three on loan at Accrington and seven for Darlington - in seven days, Hodgson still has every faith in Bossu's ability.
"Bert pulled off a couple of good saves and I don't think there was a great deal he could have done about the goals," said Hodgson.
