A BOOK detailing the history of Darlington is now available for reference at the town's main library.
The Victorian County History is a historical encyclopaedia of English counties, with an international reputation as a work of reference for local history.
The study of Darlington is the first volume to emerge, after an interval of 80 years, from the revived Victorian County History of Durham.
The volume traces the history of Darlington from the earliest times as a small Anglo-Saxon settlement up to the present day, with accounts of Darlington's social, political, topographical and economic history.
The book has been completed thanks to sponsorship by a number of agencies, including Darlington Borough Council. It can be viewed at the Crown Street Library, in the town centre.
Lee Vasey, the council's cabinet member for leisure services, said: "This is an important book which gives a detailed history of the borough from the earliest time.
"Having the book in the main library means it can be used as a reference by anyone interested in local history."
