FRIGHTENING facts about the region's Roman invaders entertained young visitors at a Roman fort yesterday.
Children's author Terry Deary, best known for his Horrible Histories series, uncovered the truth about gory games, rotten recipes and other aspects of Roman life in a talk at Segedunum fort, in Wallsend, North Tyneside.
With new books Rotten Romans and The Ruthless Romans tracing the history of the empire from Nasty Nero to Brave Boudicca, Mr Deary, who lives near Burnhope, County Durham, answered questions and signed copies.
The event was part of a summer Reading Voyage organised by Wallsend library to encourage children to read and talk about books over the summer holidays.
The event started in the library, where the young visitors made Roman helmets, swords and banners for a parade to Segedunum behind a Roman Centurion.
